to develop new nanomaterialsMalvern's analytical systems are being used in
the production of a unique product for encapsulating UV filters at
nano-engineering company Sol-Gel Technologies in Israel. UV filters
are widely used in sunscreens, but can themselves cause skin damage,
so the UV filter is encapsulated in a glass bead, retaining its UV
protective properties but preventing direct contact with the skin.
Malvern's Zetasizer Nano particle characterisation system is used
to measure particle size distribution: if the particle size is too
large, the sun protection factor is reduced, but if it is too small,
skin penetration may occur.
