Careers in Engineering and Construction

In February, we attended the "Careers in Engineering and Construction" event where we heard valuable insights into the Engineering and Construction industries in the form of two panel discussions, and a dedicated Q&A session. We participated in discussions which aimed at informing students on how to enter the industry and giving them the opportunity for Q&A with employers with roles in engineering. Rebecca Ellis, a Material Test Engineer from our operating business, HBK, provided great insights into her experience. Over 250 students attended the event and heard from early careers recruiters, what is the application process and how can you make
your application stand out and then current apprentices/graduates in corporate businesses.

In January, we proudly participated in the "Black Leaders of the Future" event. We had the the privilege of being part of the speaker panel, engaging with over 850 students. During the panel discussions, Gideon Olosunde, Graduate Electronics Engineer, and Giovanni Dylan Ababio, Customer Support Engineer, both representing our operating company Malvern Panalytical, provided inspiring insights into their journeys from the early stages of their careers to their current roles. We were also thrilled to connect with students at our networking stand, sharing the exciting work we do across the Spectris Group and discussing future career opportunities. We are focused on our commitment to fostering relationships with universities, apprenticeship providers, and organisations like Young Professionals to ensure that we are creating long term pipelines for exciting and diverse talent to join the Spectris Group.

September 2023

Careers in Science and Engineering Event

In September,  we gave a keynote presentation this curtain-raiser event for the new academic year.  Students learned highlights about our Group and what we do in the companies in Spectris plc including the fun fact that our technologies are used by chocolate manufacturers to measure particle size and crystallinity which affects taste, the feel in your mouth, shelf life and more. One of our current engineering apprentices talked about her apprenticeship journey and experiences in work and at college.  She brought to life some of the exciting things she has worked on including use of design tools, problem solving, being involved in the release of a new product and acting as a STEM ambassador in local schools.

April 2023

Science and Engineering Event

In April, we delivered a virtual Science, Engineering and IT STEM event with Young Professionals. The event was aimed at school students aged 15-18 interested in following a STEM pathway. We were joined by our colleagues from Head Office, Servomex, HBK and Malvern Panalytical where over 700 students were able to hear from our current employees, apprentices, senior engineers, scientists, cyber, and HR to inform them about STEM pathways and how to apply to companies such as Spectris. We were able to bring to life the jobs in our businesses and gave the attendees a great opportunity to connect with our current apprentices as role models.

February 2023

National Apprenticeship Week

We were joined by over a thousand school leavers to learn more about apprenticeship opportunities across a number of industries. In the virtual booth, school students attended our presentation where they heard directly from one of our engineering apprentices on her experience at Malvern Panalytical, including her challenges and goals, what inspired her to choose engineering and the projects she is involved in. After the presentation we were delighted to have individual and small group discussions in our virtual booth with school students who had some great questions about embarking on an engineering apprenticeship.

Do you want to be an engineer and explore a career in science

In July 2022, we hosted two events with Young Professionals - one online work experience event and one in person work experience event. We were joined by over 500 students online where we explored different routes into engineering careers, watched a live laboratory tour, saw a hackathon, got tips on how to make a great CV, learnt about software engineering and much more. During our in person event, 26 students attended at our site in Malvern where they discovered some of our particle measuring products, assembled different parts of the lab instruments, saw live testing and experienced a team engineering task. Both events were a great success and inspired the next generation of engineers - thank you to everyone involved!

Jun 2022

International Women in Engineering Day

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we joined the Young Professionals multi-employer event where we heard from a number of top engineers from some of the largest engineering companies. We discussed the various pathways into the industry and held a Q&A with Rebecca Levy and Clare Fenwick-Hyde who spoke all about her career as a software engineer at our operating company Malvern Panalytical. It was an inspiring evening and great to see so many women involved and sharing their stories and advice.

STEM Career Pathways

We hosted an event on the topic of ‘STEM career paths’ to talk about the different routes you can take into STEM careers. There was a lively panel debate between our current year in industry students and apprentices where we explored the differences between entering your career through university or an apprenticeship. All of our speakers were so impressive that we concluded that no matter which learning path you choose you can have a successful, dynamic and rewarding STEM career. A big thank you to our panelists Katie Willoughby, Elena Sofocleous, Lewis Cameron, Sharla Harvey, David Rolfe, Matthew Smith, Luke Purdie and Matt Hollis.

Diversity in STEM
(Science Technology, Engineering and Math)

– supporting you through your career

At Spectris, we prize diversity and play to everybody’s strengths, it’s part of our core value ‘Be true’. We are on a journey towards a workforce that proportionately reflects diversity in the population and celebrates unique perspectives.

Here are a few of our activities that we are supporting as we develop our STEM diversity program, with the help of our colleagues and partner organisations:

International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry. It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world.

Female engineers from our businesses take part in events aligned to INWED including the UK STEM Women Graduate Careers event in 2023 where women from our R&D and sustaining engineering teams networked with students following STEM pathways.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

We have had a long association with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).  Having previously sponsored this organisation as a whole Group, our membership has been continued by HBK in our Spectris Dynamics platform.  Through participation in events with SHPE we have been delighted to be able to strengthen the diversity of our recruiting and we are proud of stories such as Michael's below.

Women's Engineering Society

Malvern Panalytical are members of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) and regularly take part in the Lottie Tour. WES Lottie Tour is an annual campaign that takes 'Lottie' to many different locations accompanying lots of different engineering friends who show Lottie the work they do in engineering and related careers. WES Lottie Tour has a number of audiences - its primary aim is for Lottie to inspire and encourage young girls (and boys) to think of careers in engineering and STEM subjects to be open to everyone.
Michael Hernandez

I became a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at the age of 18, when I was invited to a pre-college conference. This conference was put together by the University of Illinois students in SHPE to prepare the incoming class for what to expect and how to succeed in university. I immediately made a new family and have been involved with the organization ever since. The year after I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I was invited to help plan and execute the annual conventions hosted by SHPE, which take place in different cities each year.  My role is to organize the Tech Talks, but I also get the chance to have inspiring conversations with students and professionals at these conferences. Occasionally, I have the opportunity to speak in an Alumni Insights series with my local chapter - the last time I did this was in April, but I am planning to speak with them again in the near future.  I look forward to continuing to give back to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers; with the support of Spectris and HBK, we will make a significant difference in the lives of students with rising identities.
