The Pirelli Reifenwerke factory in Germany manufactures around 8 million tyres each year. One of the key challenges facing the company is to reduce tyre noise without sacrificing durability or safety. The company uses Brüel & Kjær's noise analysis equipment to record and analyse car and motorcycle tyre noise and vibration in relation to speed both in an acoustic cell and on a test track. The results enable Pirelli to predict accurately the noise of a new tyre design before it is actually produced. This has shortened the development time by around three months and also reduced costs as fewer prototypes are needed.
